7:00pm: Rauno Tolonen - Price Action and Chart Reading

For Rauno, Technical Analysis is about seeing and sensing what is happening, with regard to price movements, and then trading is acting appropriately within that flow of observed conditions. Trading is, in a sense, purely reactionary. Your choice of actions; buy, sell, hold or abstain, are quite simple and in a sense, limited. A large part of the complexity arises because of the complexity of the conditions the trader faces. To be able to react to, or react within, complex conditions you must first “see” what is going on. For traders employing technical methods, chart reading is the “seeing”.

Technical traders generally need to see trends, trading ranges, volatility levels, traded volumes and, importantly, changes in the conditions of these characteristics. Rauno will provide some background about how he approaches technical analysis of price action and how that can applied to identifying trade opportunities and dealing with exit decisions. While Rauno’s focus is on long-only Australian stocks, the technical analysis of price action can be applied to any liquid market where reliable price data is available.

Rauno Tolonen lives in from Perth, Western Australia, and has been a member of the ATAA since 2007 and a full-time trader/investor since 2005. He has a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Business Law) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Law, both from Curtin University in Western Australia. Rauno has worked in commercial accounting, private practice accounting and commercial management environments at arms-length, and family businesses. But it is studying the markets and trading that has captured his work-life imagination. He has traded Australian equities and Australian exchange traded options, and is currently focussed on long-only Australian equities trades and investments using predominantly technical, price action, chart-reading methods.
