Robert Brain – Private Trader, Educator and Nimble Short-Term Investor

Topic:  Trading Insights – “I’m never wrong – or am I?”

Back before COVID, we started to run a series of “Trading Insights” segments in the monthly Melbourne ATAA meetings to provide our traders and investors with special insights to help make them more profitable. This session continues that theme.

Many investors and traders have a background or career in engineering, mathematics or science. And in that field there is often just one right answer in many situations. These people are used to arriving at one correct solution to a problem, and they accept that all other proffered solutions are likely to be wrong.

With such a background, many of these people struggle with trading and investing because they are looking for the one correct answer when setting up a trade, or an investment position. So, once they enter a market position, they often refuse to accept that their decision might have been wrong, and so they hold on to losing positions for way too long. The end result? A loss of capital. Pause for a moment and ask yourself if you might be one of these people, and looking to be more profitable?

In this session we will explore this problem, and explain how to identify this in ourselves and in our everyday life. We will also explore ways to address the problem, and to be more successful with our trading and investing.

Profile

Robert has been studying the many aspects of technical analysis since 2006, and he is convinced that the share market price charts summarise the underlying opinions and emotions of the real market participants, and that every price chart tells a story. He also believes that Price Action Context is very relevant, and that Nimble Short-Term Investing is the way to go.

A few years ago Robert decided to combine his then casual interest in the share market with his extensive experience as an educator to develop his web-based Share Market Toolbox business to help investors and traders to refine their own strategies, and learn about the strategies of others. Robert is a private trader and educator, and an ATAA Councillor in the Melbourne Chapter. He also runs the Australian BullCharts (charting software) User Group with monthly Melbourne meetings and online webinar sessions.

6:45 pm to 8 pm – GUEST SPEAKER

Matthew Jones –  Director, Investor & Adviser

Topic: “Where to Invest in Q4 2023”

The past three months have been difficult for stock investors as rising interest rates blew as a major headwind against the advance.  China's expected recovery has not material-ised, and commodity prices are slipping.
It is not easy to find good growth prospects. Unless you know where to look.

Join Matthew for his quarterly update where he will show you exactly where to focus your efforts in the last quarter of 2023 and explain why these areas deserve your attention.

Profile

Matthew started his career working for the large financial institutions and advising corporate clients how to hedge their long-term currency exposure. For the last 14 years he has been a Director of Capital 19 and now uses his expertise to advise retail investors how to best position their portfolios in the current economic environment. A life-long investor himself, Matthew began buying stocks when he was just 16 and often takes a contrarian view to stock selection, favouring undervalued, out-of-favour stocks, that offer asymmetrical returns.

Approx 8.15 pm – Either: guest speaker-led general discussion, OR T.A. case study, over dinner for the benefit of everyone present.

For all of the people attending this session and staying for dinner, there will be a general markets Q&A, or a T.A. discussion, over dinner.  This segment will NOT be broadcast and will NOT be recorded. It is for the benefit of the members and visitors who stay for dinner.
