From the President's Desk – August 2026

Our Online Conference on the 22nd of August is now just around the corner, and I'm very pleased with the program we have put together. Under the theme “The Trading Edge: Where Mindset, Strategy and Analysis Converge”, we have five speakers covering different aspects of trading and investing, together with the support of three conference sponsors. If you haven't registered yet, there is still time, and I hope many of you will join us for what should be an informative and enjoyable day. Full program and registration details are available on the 2026 Online Conference page.

Another initiative beginning to take shape is the ATAA's new Substack. We've started publishing articles drawn from our extensive collection of educational material accumulated by the Association over many years, bringing some valuable older content back to life in a refreshed format, and making it accessible to a new audience. This includes articles from the early ATAA Journal, much of which is as relevant as ever. This venture is still very much in its early stages, but it has considerable potential. I encourage you to explore the ATAA Substack and subscribe to receive new articles as they are published.

I'm also pleased that the Board has approved a new $20 student membership. We would like to encourage more younger people to become interested in the markets and involved with the ATAA, and we don't want the cost of membership to be a barrier for students who would like to join. The next step will be getting the word out to universities, TAFEs and student groups and encouraging more students to become part of the ATAA community.

Finally, a reminder that our AGM will be held on the 18th of November. We welcome members who would like to contribute more directly to the future of the Association to consider nominating for the Board. If you're interested and would like to know what's involved, please feel free to speak with me or any of our current directors (there's a list of directors on the website: ATAA Overview > Presidents and Directors).

For now, though, I hope to see many of you at our Online Conference on the 22nd of August.

Jim Haralambidis
ATAA National President

Executive Summary – ATAA Board Meeting (August 2026)

The ATAA Board met online on Tuesday 4th August to review current activities and progress on a number of initiatives, including.
  • With the Online Conference on the 22nd August rapidly approaching, the Board received an update on final preparations. The speaker program is in place, three sponsors have been confirmed, and promotional activity is continuing across email, social media and other channels.
  • The Board also reviewed the initial setup and development of the ATAA's new Substack, which is now live and beginning to feature articles adapted from the Association's extensive archive of historical educational material. This initiative is intended to make greater use of existing ATAA content and introduce the Association to a wider audience. Members can visit and subscribe to the ATAA Substack page.
  • A new student membership fee of $20 per year was approved, with new members joining under this category having non-voting status. The initiative is designed to make it easier for students to become involved with the ATAA and develop an ongoing interest in trading, investing and technical analysis. Planning for the promotion of the new membership category will now commence.
  • Work is also progressing on a comprehensive review and update of the ATAA Constitution and Board Policies to ensure they reflect current requirements and good governance practice. Proposed Constitution updates will be provided to members ahead of the AGM in November.
  • The next Board meeting will be held on Tuesday 1st September.

It's only one week until the ATAA National Conference (online this year). There is so much information that the speakers will be sharing, and it's not that expensive, really. See more details and the Registration link further down this Blast news.

How big? Would you trade this? - Did you know that there are currently more than 2,300 "securities" listed on the ASX, including more than 460 ETFs. The largest security by market capitalisation is currently BHP ($322 billion) closely followed by CBA ($291 billion). At the other end of the market cap scale, one of the smallest securities which has been trading recently is MEL ($0.48 million) or VOLT ($0.5 million). Of course, the market cap potentially changes each day as the share price changes. Would you trade a stock with a market cap of only $500,000? And which trades about $13,000 to $20,000 in value on average each week? If so, what position size would you trade?

ATAA Trading Expert Series – Markets, Models and Mindsets

ATAA's Trading Expert Series presented Marsten Parker in April

"Systematic Strategy Development in the Age of AI"

Our most recent event in the “Trading Expert Series” was held on 11th April with Marsten Parker of RealTest, exploring the use of agentic AI to supercharge trading strategy development productivity. The live event was very well attended by both members and non-members, and the recording of the session on YouTube has received over 1.4K views – our best performing recording in this series to date. Following this event, the NSWG will make way for the ATAA Online Conference in August. We then plan to run another Trading Expert even in November.

About the Speaker – Marsten Parker has traded his own account for a living since 1998, following a 14-year career as a software engineer. He initially trained as a concert violinist before switching to computer programming, founding and selling a software company before turning to trading full-time. Parker is the only purely systematic trader featured in Jack Schwager's Unknown Market Wizards — the fifth book in the iconic Market Wizards series — where his long-term track record is documented in detail. A defining characteristic of Marsten's approach is what he calls his "Spirit of Experimentation" — a persistent willingness to question, iterate, and improve. RealTest has evolved alongside his trading practice over more than two decades as his primary strategy research tool, and today serves a growing community of systematic traders worldwide as a purpose-built backtesting and portfolio simulation platform.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS
and Trading/Investing Tips

The best performing security in late July 2026?
The purpose of this article is to encourage you to find the best performing ASX security in a recent 5-day week, and to quantify its performance, and then further consider using technical analysis methods whether it might have been a buy at the time.

The challenge for you:
Identify any ASX security that you have found and which has performed very well in a specific and recent week.  In particular the following very specific 5-day period: the last full trading week with all five days within the previous calendar month (ie. if we are now in August, the last full week in July: 27-31). And tell us the following:
  1. How did you find this security (eg. using a market/BC scan?);
  2. Quantify its share price performance over the calendar week;
  3. Would you have been tempted to invest in it at the end of that week?
  4. In hindsight now, with more price data available, was it worth trading/investing?
Price charts of two possible securities are shown here:
Best performing stock in July 2026
Disclaimer:
Firstly, it must be stated that the observations and interpretations shown in this article are those of the author, and they are not recommendations for action of any sort.  This material is for information and education only.  And it is possible that your own interpretation might vary from those of the author (which might be incorrect on purpose), in which case feel free to send feedback to the author for consideration.

Introduction:
If you are interested in share market price charts, then this article could be of interest to you.  If you are a trend trader, and looking for a security with up-trending share price, you might want to identify one very early in its uptrend – and this article will be of great interest to you.

“Security” versus “stock/shares” – The ASX securities exchange includes more than 2000 ‘securities’, most of which are ‘shares’, but many are not. These days there are many ETFs (more than 450 at last count) which are technically not stocks (with shares), and when you buy/sell an ETF you are trading in units of the ETF and not shares.  In addition there are more than 70 ‘unit trusts’ which are technically not shares either.  So in this article I am referring to any of these by calling them all ‘securities’.  Even so, there might be some interchange of terminology – such as the very commonly used term: ‘share price’.

How to identify a trending security

There are many ways to identify an uptrending share price.  In this article I am keeping it simple, and looking for a security with a share price that has increased significantly over just one week – and a very particular week.  And then I drill down and look at several technical analysis indicators.  Mind you, there are smarter and better ways to find trending securities, but that complicates this exercise.

My plan is to do this exercise each month, and at least a couple of weeks after the focused week so as to avoid the appearance of recommending a purchase – the share price activity being studied could not be called “current price activity”.  Besides, if we look at price charts that are more than a couple of weeks old, we are in a better position to quickly determine whether or not our analysis was correct or not.  And in doing so, please remember that technical analysis is not a 100% accurate science.  It is all about making observations about investor and trader behaviour, and trying to anticipate their future behaviour.  So a win/loss ratio of 4 wins to 6 losses can still be successful – provided your losses are small and your winners can run.
Underlying selection criteria

In this exercise I am looking for the best performing share price in the following specific 5-day period: the last full trading week (Monday to Friday) in the previous calendar month, with all five days within the month.  That is, if we are now in August, the last full week in July of 2026 is: 27th-31st.

I have run a market scan and found a lot more than 50 securities that meet this criteria.  And I have chosen two to show you here – CNB and BRG (see their price charts and weekly performance in the charts above).  Many traders/investors might see the price increase of the former of the week in question (54.7 per cent) and think that that is great.  However, in the following analysis I will be focusing on BRG (up 10.9 per cent in the week of 27-31 July).

Conclusion (this is NOT a recommendation to buy):

Based on my personal analysis of this security’s price chart, in hindsight, I probably would have bought this stock on Monday 3 August.

Chart analysis – Support, Resistance and Simple Trend
BRG Uptrend
In the weekly (line) price chart shown here, we can see that the share price at the end of the latest week is close to the peak of $32.50 back in February – a possible resistance level.  But, on this weekly line chart we can’t see the range of the price in each trading day, which might be important and useful.  So we should also look at the daily candle chart, just in case.

On this chart the sequence of Higher Peak and Higher Trough is apparent, and flags a rising trend.  This is according to the Dow Theory that says an uptrend is in place if there is a higher peak and a higher trough, and the trend is in place until it is confirmed to be over.

The other thing to look for is a chart pattern.  On this chart, the one pattern that is apparent would be a Rising Trend Channel – a pair of sloping lines with one sitting above the price and one below the price starting in March (and not shown).

Zoom out for a Bigger Picture

I often remind traders to zoom out the price chart – because the market is like an elephant.  If we switch the chart to a Monthly period, and zoom out to show price data back to 2010, we will see a major long-term uptrend in place (not shown here – but you can generate one).

Chart analysis – Moving Average, trend and MACD

Note the following observations in the next price chart below.

The upper pane which shows candles now also has a 30-week EMA (dotted blue curve). That EMA has been mostly flat across the chart (down and up a little), and the vertical red line arguably indicates the week where it turned upward a little more than previously.  Then it turned a little more upward in late July, and the latest weekly candle has risen strongly above the MA curve.  [Remember that Stan Weinstein wrote about the 30 week SMA in his book, “Secrets for Profiting in Bull and Bear Markets”, 1988.]
BRG and MACD and EMA
The MACD indicator is shown in the bottom pane of the above price chart.  Remember that the MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence indicator) can be used to assess share price momentum by measuring the relationship between two moving averages of a security's price (the standard values are 12 period and 26 period moving averages, and the well-known Linda Raschke uses the 3 and 10 period MAs instead).

Note that the MACD Line (the solid green line) was travelling well below its own Zero line until mid-June.  However, the MACD Line crossed “Above” its Signal Line (the dotted red line) in early May – indicated by the vertical dotted green line. This is considered a strong buy signal.

Also note that in June and into July the MACD and its Signal Line both continued to move higher, and crossed above the MACD Zero line, indicating increasing share price momentum.

Chart analysis – Alan Hull Range+ and RSI

In the next chart, below, the shaded areas on the price pane are Alan Hull’s Range+ indicator.  With the share price in the green Zone 3 (buy/hold) zone, through most of June and into July (except for one weekly candle in July), the observation is a buy signal.  It is also bullish that the “top cord” of the indicator (the very top line), and also the central cord, are both indicating “higher peaks and troughs” across this chart, which is somewhat bullish.
BRG and Hull Range+ and RSI
Also included in the bottom pane of the price chart above is the RSI indicator (Relative Strength Index) which is a momentum indicator that measures the speed and change of price.  It is used to identify over-bought or over-sold conditions, and is plotted on a scale from zero to 100.

In this chart the RSI is actually trending upward across the chart (April to July).  The key horizontal thresholds are marked with dotted lines (over-sold in green at 30 and over-bought in red at 70).  Some people prefer to use 20 and 80 instead of 30 and 70 – that’s fine.  On this chart the RSI has crossed above the mid-point of 50 a couple of times, and at the far right end of the chart it is at the highest level on this chart and rising above 50.  Some traders see this as a potential buy signal (noting that it is prudent to seek out at least two buy signals, and not rely on just one).

Conclusion

In the material above I have shared the weekly share price performance of BRG over the period from at least April 2026 until early August.  It was up 10.9 per cent over the focus week of 27-31 July 2026.  I found this stock by doing a market scan and looking for securities that performed well over that week. You can run a similar scan over any week that you choose, including the latest week.  I then went on to study the performance of a couple of chart indicators, which all seemed to point to bullish conditions.  The big question would be whether that performance can continue in the weeks that follow.

Other indicators

Just some other indicators not included in this discussion are:

    • GMMA
    • ATR
    • Momentum

In Closing - I have started a discussion thread in the ATAA Online Forum (Indicators and Charting). We would love to hear about your own experience. Tell us the best performing ASX security that you have found in the week of 27-31 July 2026. And tell us how much the share price increased, and how you found it.

Hoping this exercise has been useful for you.

Whether you’re just starting out or building confidence, ATAA gives you clear education, real-world insights, and a supportive community, helping you understand the markets, avoid common mistakes, and make better trading decisions.
(if someone asks you why they should join the ATAA, then simply tell them this)

And another thing... About Emails
Before you unsubscribe:- Please note that if you ever unsubscribe from any of the ATAA emails, then unfortunately you will be unsubscribing for ALL ATAA emails. So please think carefully before hitting the Unsubscribe button.

Beware Spam emails! - On a different topic, one of our members emailed me recently to advise that he has been receiving more spam emails than usual. We all need to be very careful about the emails we receive these days because many of them are spam (unwanted and unsolicited), and they can contain sometimes hidden links to download suspicious or malicious software for nefarious purposes. The bottom line is to always be on alert to these attempted actions.

In Closing

I do hope you have found this edition of the Blast! Monthly News both interesting and useful. Feel free to send my any feedback - good or bad.

NOTES about this newsletter: The appearance of this email newsletter can be a little different depending on how you view it. In Google's Gmail the Gmail Inbox might show just a portion of this edition. At this stage I am not sure of the best way to work around this issue. And my apologies continue for any odd formatting that you might find which I cannot resolve - font size or line spacing etc - as these seem to be oddities in our CE email editor tool (there are probably odd HTML codes hidden behind the text, which we have not found yet). Every month when I prepare this newsletter, I spend ridiculous amounts of time fiddling around trying to make the line spacing consistent throughout, and the font sizes consistent; but it still turns out less than I would want it to.
