From the President's Desk – May 2026
One of the more interesting discussions at this month’s Board meeting centred around a question that many member-based organisations face from time to time — how to balance member value with broader community reach.
In the ATAA’s case, the discussion focused on our Trading Expert series of events, which has become one of our most popular and widely viewed initiatives. These events attract both members and non-members and have helped introduce many traders and investors to the Association. At the same time, they are also part of the educational value we provide to members. This matter was also brought up in the Chapter (and SIG) Office Bearers’ meeting the day before. The Board discussion highlighted the challenge of balancing the broader promotional value of these events with the importance of maintaining meaningful benefits for ATAA members. As no change to the current approach was agreed at this meeting, the matter will be discussed further at next month’s Board meeting.
More broadly, a significant amount of work is continuing behind the scenes across several areas of the Association. This includes ongoing development of marketing and content initiatives, conference planning, improvements to operational systems, and work aimed at strengthening the long-term sustainability and resilience of the ATAA.
One area receiving increasing attention is how we can make better use of the substantial educational material and expertise the ATAA has accumulated over many years. There is considerable potential to present some of this material in ways that both support members and help introduce new audiences to the Association and the broader field of technical analysis.
Planning is also continuing for both the upcoming online conference later this year and the in-person conference planned for 2027. Conferences remain one of the most valuable ways for members to connect with each other, exchange ideas, and engage with experienced traders, investors, and market professionals.
As always, the ATAA continues to rely heavily on the contribution of volunteers across chapters, SIGs, working groups, and Board activities. If you have ever considered becoming more involved in the Association, we would be very pleased to hear from you.
I look forward to continuing to work with members as we further develop these initiatives over the months ahead.

| Executive Summary – ATAA Board Meeting (May 2026)
The ATAA Board met online on Tuesday the 5th of May, to review ongoing projects and discuss a number of operational and strategic matters:
- Membership trends and marketing initiatives remained an important area of discussion. The Board reviewed recent promotional activity and broader strategies aimed at increasing awareness of the Association and improving engagement with both existing and prospective members. Work continues on content marketing initiatives, including the development of additional educational and promotional material.
- The Board also reviewed progress on planning for upcoming events including the 2026 online conference (in August) and the 2027 in-person conference (likely to be in May 2027). Conference planning and speaker coordination are continuing, together with discussion around future event formats and member access arrangements for educational content.
- The matter of whether the Trading Expert series of events should continue to be available to non-members free of charge was discussed extensively. No change to the current policy was agreed at this meeting, and the matter will be considered further at the next Board meeting.
- Several governance and operational matters were also considered. These included work on sponsorship guidelines, improvements to communication systems and subscription management, ongoing archive and document management projects, and broader organisational continuity and workload considerations.
- The Board adopted a formal Sponsorship Guidelines framework intended to assist in the evaluation of future sponsorship and partnership opportunities while maintaining the ATAA’s independence and educational focus.
- The Board also discussed longer-term operational support requirements for the Association and considered options aimed at improving continuity, reducing volunteer workload pressures, and strengthening organisational resilience.
- The next Board meeting will be held on Tuesday the 2nd of June.
| ATAA Website Resource Library Updates - recordings March-April 2026
HUGE RESOURCE. Our ATAA Resource Library now has many presentations and recordings going back to 2008, as well as hundreds of technical journal articles in the ATAA Journals. You can drill down on these using the website menu: Resources > Presentations by Date.
An alternative way to find something specific on a particular topic is to search the library using the menu option: Resources > Search Resource Library.
The materials recently added to the Resource Library include:
- Thursday 9 April - Melbourne Chapter Hybrid meeting
- Alan Clement - "Global Markets Quarterly Technical Outlook".
- Robert Brain (short term replacement for the scheduled speaker) - "How good are you at picking stocks? Should I have bought this stock?"
- Thursday 12 March - Melbourne Chapter Hybrid meeting
- Keith Mundy- "Why is it so? Part 3"
- Max Knobel - "Cognitive Biases in Trading".
- April Trading Expert Series:
- Sat 11 April: Marsten Parker (RealTest) - "Systematic Strategy Development in the Age of AI".
All of these items can be found from the ATAA website menu: Resources > Presentations by Date. Make sure to browse the earlier recordings in the Resource Library, because you never know what you've been missing. And you can also search the Resource Library by keyword. If your local chapter or SIG has a video recording, or a (PowerPoint) slide deck of a recent session, then it can also be added to our library collection. |
ATAA National Board updates
| | | ATAA Value Proposition: One of the topics that you might have heard about from time to time is that of the Value Proposition for an organisation. This has come up in recent discussions in our own Marketing Working Group, and after doing some research, and having a lot of discussion, the recent ATAA Board meeting agreed on an interim Value Proposition statement. It is now posted into the ATAA website home page, in the block "Welcome to the Australian Technical Analysts Association".
But why have a Value Proposition statement? - There are several reasons why, as follows:
- Recruitment and Retention – It provides a clear, compelling reason for prospects to join the ATAA, and it reminds existing members of why their member fees are worthwhile.
- Operational Compass – It guides internal decision-making, ensuring that new programs and services align with what members actually value.
- Cuts Through "Noise" – In a crowded market with many alternative sources for news and networking (eg. LinkedIn, YouTube), it highlights what only the ATAA can uniquely provide, such as trusted professional standards and the availability of accredited certification.
- Focuses on Member Needs – It shifts the perspective from internal goals (what the association does) to member outcomes (what members want and achieve).
- Ensures Consistent Messaging – It aligns board members, staff and volunteers around a single, clear message, building credibility and trust across all communication channels.
- ROI Clarity – It helps members see a tangible "Return on Investment" for their time and fees.
- Differentiates from Competitors – It identifies a "sweet spot" where the association’s unique strengths meet the unmet needs of its specific community.
Robert Brain (ATAA Marketing Director) | ATAA Trading Expert Series – Markets, Models and Mindsets | ATAA's Trading Expert Series presents Marsten Parker
"Systematic Strategy Development in the Age of AI"
Our most recent event in the “Trading Expert Series” was held on 11th April with Marsten Parker of RealTest, exploring the use of agentic AI to supercharge trading strategy development productivity. The live event was very well attended by both members and non-members, and the recording of the session on YouTube has received over 1.4K views – our best performing recording in this series to date. Following this event, the NSWG will make way for the ATAA Online Conference in August. We then plan to run another Trading Expert even in November. | | About the Speaker:
Marsten Parker has traded his own account for a living since 1998, following a 14-year career as a software engineer. He initially trained as a concert violinist before switching to computer programming, founding and selling a software company before turning to trading full-time. Parker is the only purely systematic trader featured in Jack Schwager's Unknown Market Wizards — the fifth book in the iconic Market Wizards series — where his long-term track record is documented in detail.
A defining characteristic of Marsten's approach is what he calls his "Spirit of Experimentation" — a persistent willingness to question, iterate, and improve. RealTest has evolved alongside his trading practice over more than two decades as his primary strategy research tool, and today serves a growing community of systematic traders worldwide as a purpose-built backtesting and portfolio simulation platform.
| | | ATAA Conference Working Group Update | | ATAA Online Conference Coming This August
The date of 22 August has been confirmed for the online conference. The Working Group reviewed an expanded list of potential speakers. The group is currently actively pursuing both national and international presenters. A marketing graphic (see above) was reviewed and approved in principle, with minor refinements required. The group agreed to postpone broader sales and marketing activity until the speaker lineup is confirmed. Stay tuned for further updates, and watch your email inbox for details.
2027 In-Person Conference Venue Selection
The member survey on venue preferences for the 2027 in-person conference returned an overwhelming majority preference for a CBD Melbourne location over the Yarra Valley or other alternatives. Members indicated that ease of access, networking opportunities, and venue surroundings were equally important factors in their decision.
Based on these results, the Working Group has confirmed that it will proceed exclusively with CBD Melbourne venue options. The current shortlist includes: the Pullman and Mercure at Albert Park, the Novotel on Collins, and the Crowne Plaza near the casino. The group determined that additional options are needed and is aiming for approximately half a dozen CBD hotels to evaluate. Site visits will be arranged once a suitable shortlist is assembled.
More details soon.

Special Workshop | | | | Special Perth Chapter Workshop
Technical Analysis Workshop hosted by Gary Burton CFTe
Saturday 20th June 2026 10.00am - 3.30pm
VENUE: State Library of Western Australia, Great Southern Room, 25 Francis St, Perth
A Workshop for all levels of experience.
It is often observed everyone wants to be the winning race driver, but winning races really depends on the level of skill from the mechanic. Behind the scenes preparation long before the race starts. This analogy is no different from the private investor wanting Trading and Investing success, but in our world, we must be our own mechanics.
This workshop will focus on those base principles from which a sound strategy can be developed. Although many trading programs have over 2500 separate indicators it's only the simple underlying price action that a market operator must understand and incorporate into a Daily or Weekly routine, like a mechanic with a strict workflow of assembly. The workshop will help everyone develop a self-proving workflow from basic Trend analysis to the intimate Daily Bar and Candles as they show repeating patterns that any level of trader or investor can develop into a simple self-proven trading strategy. There will be some hands-on chart work during the session the participant can take home. The day will be a Q&A event though out the workshop.
Time will be made available during the day for morning tea and lunch.
All ATAA and non-ATAA members are welcome to attend this event. A small fee is required for non-ATAA members, consider the membership cost options at the present time.
On Line registration is essential for attendance (available soon).

The Canberra Chapter enjoyed our third meeting of 2026 with an in-person meeting on Tuesday, April 21, 2026. It was refreshing to have two new guests to our meeting and welcome additional guests to join us.
Following the ASX review by Bruce Taylor, Gabriel presented our portfolio competition review with volatility continuing to produce varying degrees of success in US and Australian markets. 4DX was the winning ASX stock with a 65% increase since listing in the competition.
We had three main presentations to constitute our ‘This is how I trade’ meeting. The idea of these presentations is to provide three real trading experiences in three different markets using three different instruments.
Our first presentation was entitled: ‘Options Trading Mining Stocks in Volatile times’ with BHP going under the microscope with its volatility during an options trade.
Our second presentation by Brand Hoff was entitled: ‘My use of Technical Analysis’. Using point and figure to indicate targets on an Ichimoku cloud, Brand was able to accurately forecast some useful targets to take profits.
The third presentation by Gabriel focused on some recent trading in the Forex Market which provided some interesting perspectives using Heiken Ashi and Moving Averages to capture some reduced risk profits.
Remember to bring your portfolio selection to our next meeting. If you would like to enter the portfolio competition and cannot make it to the meeting, send your selection to gabriel.spacca@ataa.asn.au.
Good trading and good health.

latest news | | |
April’s RealTest Coders workshop (operating under the Melbourne Quant SIG) had 17 registrants and 11 participants. During the meeting:
- Mohamed Nasher spoke about confluence.
- Chris Meakin spoke about John Bollinger’s custom Equal-Weight Commodity Futures Index.
- Scott Bass spoke on using Claude Code and Codex::
- The use of Claude Code in strategy development and coding assistance is fast becoming a popular topic with RealTest users, especially since Marsten’s presentation in the Trading Expert Series held on the morning of Saturday 11 April. There is a link to the recording on the home page here.
At the next meeting (to be held on Monday, the 11th of May), Chris talked about how he (with the inspiration and assistance of others) has recreated John B’s Equal-Weight (EW) Commodity Futures Index, as well as EW ASX Sector Indices in RealTest.
Come along to our meetings with any ideas or critical challenges. The meetings are aimed at competent users of RealTest, but new users and intending users are more than welcome to join. A number of participants have also formed small ‘coding buddy’ groups (2-4 users) to develop and code up strategies collaboratively.
The RealTest Coders workshop meets online monthly. Recordings of the meetings along with any associated material can be found in the RT Coders SIG forum here.

latest news | | | After the upsets with petrol prices and availability, our April meeting a month ago was changed to online only. It went well, but of course we all missed the in-person networking, chit chat, and sharing of ideas and strategies. I am please to report that our May meeting held last week (14th May) was a great success - and we even had a little finger food left over during the networking (we needed a couple more people to attend).
In our April meeting one of our speakers had to withdraw at the last minute for personal reasons, so I revived one of my own recent presentations on the topic of "Should I have bought this stock?". (The video recording of this presentation is up in the website Resource Library). And, strangely, this happened again at our May meeting. One of our speakers had to withdraw the day before the in-person meeting, so I again revived one of my past presentations - this time from 3 years ago on the topic of "Price Action Context". The video recording of this will be in the ATAA Resource Library soon; but in the meantime, a brief overview of key material is included below in this month's Technical Analysis segment.
As a reminder, the benefits of meeting in-person include:
- Invaluable networking (or "common gossip") from 5.15pm to 6pm (including free finger food),
- The interactions in the room during the broadcast session 6-8pm, and
- Further networking and guest speaker mingling over dinner after 8pm.
Don’t forget that public transport (tram) runs past the hotel front door, the train station is only 700m away, and there is ample car parking around the corner and nearby.
And if you see any of our committee/council members below, please thank them for their invaluable contributions in helping to run our hybrid meetings, and make sure that we get a quality video recording to edit and upload to the ATAA Resource Library on the website.

| | | Price Action Context - How to avoid the big down-slide in share price | The following material is an update from my 2023 presentation on this topic, and updated for delivery to the Melbourne Chapter Hybrid meeting last Thursday 14th May (at short notice, after our planned member speaker had to withdraw at short notice).
Introduction - Have you ever observed odd or unexpected share price movements on the price charts and wondered what’s caused it? Or why there was a big move (either up or down) in recent days? Have you been caught out by a sharp “down-slide” in the share price? It might have been sliding for months! How can the average investor avoid losing money in this situation?
The price chart shown below is a monthly candlestick chart of Liontown Resources (LTR) from 2015 until early 2023. its share price moved from around 0.5 cents to $1.50 over this period. There were quite some large moves. Could we have spotted these moves on a daily or weekly price chart at the time, and understood those moves and why they occurred, and then invested with confidence? | | | A second quick example is of Cettire Limited (CTT) at right, showing a price increase of some 600 per cent in 2021, then a fall of about 90 per cent into 2022. Could we have understood these price moves and why they occurred, and then invested /traded with confidence? | | | But why do share prices move like this? There are a few possible reasons and it is useful to be aware of them:
- People’s opinion about fair value today;
- Opinion of future value of the shares;
- A calculated number based on various assumptions about a variety of factors;
- These are influenced by: company announcements, government announcements, broker recommendations and various news items;
- Mister Market’s opinion of the share price.
Don't forget that the share price opinions that really matter are NOT those of the brokers and analysts, UNLESS they are actively participating in the market. The share prices are actually influenced by the real market participants. They cause the moves that we see on the price charts.
My definition of Price Action Context is: "Observing an odd or unexpected share price movement, and understanding the cause of it by looking at relevant price action (the simple price chart), or a company announcement or other news."
Understanding the relevant announcement or news helps us to understand the price action within a relevant context.
By understanding the price action context:
- We are better able to protect our capital (ie. reduce or close a position that is in jeopardy);
- We are able to more closely monitor the ongoing price action (ie. prepare a sound Stop Loss level, or watch the holding more frequently – daily instead of weekly);
- Improve our win/loss ratio;
- We won’t be surprised by a subsequent adverse news item or share price move.
In the video recording of this presentation to the Melbourne chapter hybrid meeting on 14th May, there are several good examples of large price moves with some discussion (including: LTR, APX, KGN, CTT). There is also a discussion about viewing the charts of these stocks using a logarithmic price axis versus a regular linear price axis. There is also discussion of a possible Head and Shoulders pattern on the above chart of CTT, including a note about the importance of looking at the volume, and also viewing the details on a daily price chart. | This year - 2026 - has been challenging for markets and the market participants, because of three things: Trump’s Middle East War; Oil prices => petrol, diesel prices; and the May 2026 Federal Budget (announced on 12th May). And some of the stocks suffering very large down-slides have included:
- CSL (down 68 per cent over 91 weeks),
- TPW (down 81 per cent over 40 weeks),
- COH (down 67 per cent over 88 weeks),
- XRO (down 56 per cent over 44 weeks),
- TWE (down 71 per cent over 164 weeks).
In the presentation (and video recording) I contend that it can be very useful to understand what causes the big moves in share prices so that we can be more confident with our investing or trading decisions. But how can we find out relevant information about these price moves? | Here are some possibilities:
Also broker websites, and look at broker consensus for buy/sell/hold recommendations. In this regard you can look at:
However, some of these company items and recommendations can be several months old. So make sure to study all of the available details.
There is more discussion and details in the presentation (and video recording) that will soon be available on the ATAA website in the Resource Library. | I do hope this has been useful for you.

I do hope you have found this edition of the Blast! Monthly News both interesting and useful. Feel free to send my any feedback - good or bad.
NOTES about this newsletter: The appearance of this email newsletter can be a little different depending on how you view it. In Google's Gmail the Gmail Inbox might show just a portion of this edition. At this stage I am not sure of the best way to work around this issue. And my apologies continue for any odd formatting that you might find which I cannot resolve - font size or line spacing etc - as these seem to be oddities in our CE email editor tool (there are probably odd HTML codes hidden behind the text, which we have not found yet). Every month when I prepare this newsletter, I spend ridiculous amounts of time fiddling around trying to make the line spacing consistent throughout, and the font sizes consistent; but it still turns out less than I would want it to.
