From the President's Desk – September 2025

The ATAA continues to build momentum as we head into the final months of 2025. After a small dip in July, membership numbers have bounced back, with strong renewal rates from those who first joined through our recent promotional campaign. It’s good to see our community growing steadily again.

ATAA Conference - Preparations for our premier annual event, the October ATAA National Conference, are on track, with a strong line-up of speakers confirmed. I’m pleased to report that sponsorships have already exceeded our expectations, giving the event an excellent foundation. I encourage all members to take part - either in person, where you can connect directly with fellow members and our speakers, or online if that’s not possible. And don't miss out on the Conference Early Bird special pricing.

Marketing and Member promotions - We are also making progress on our marketing front. Our in-house marketing efforts are continuing, and we have also begun working with a Melbourne marketing agency to run a trial campaign. While a formal contract hasn’t yet been finalised, the aim of this campaign will be to boost the ATAA’s presence on social media and strengthen our membership drive.

Looking ahead, the Board will meet in person the day after the National Conference to focus on long-term strategy, and our Annual General Meeting will follow on Wednesday 12 November 2025. I look forward to seeing strong member participation at these important events as we continue to build a strong and vibrant ATAA together.

ATAA National President

Executive Summary – ATAA Board Meeting (2 September 2025)

Key points from the September ATAA Board meeting:
  • Reported a return to steady membership growth after July’s dip, with strong renewal rates from promotional sign-ups.
  • Preparations for the October National Conference are progressing well, with speakers confirmed, sponsorships secured, and registrations building.
  • The upcoming National Speaker event featuring Zoe Bollinger (Saturday 13 September) has also attracted strong interest, with nearly 200 registrations already.
  • The Board approved two motions: to prepare a formal contract with a Melbourne marketing agency for an initial digital campaign aimed at boosting ATAA’s profile and membership by building a stronger social media presence, and to display ATAA’s official tagline more prominently on the website.
  • Planning is also underway for the in-person board meeting on the day after the National Conference, and for the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 12 November 2025.

ATAA Website Resource Library Updates - recordings August 2025

Our ATAA Resource Library now has many presentations and recordings going back to 2008. You can drill down on these using the website menu: Resources > Presentations by Date. An alternative way to find something specific on a particular topic is to search the library using the menu option: Resources > Search Resource Library.

The materials recently added to the Resource Library include:
  • Thursday 14 August - Melbourne Chapter Hybrid meeting:
    • Paul Ash - Technical Analysis for Investment - Chuck Hughes' Strategies.
    • Alan McKay - Trading Techniques.
All of these items can be found from the ATAA website menu: Resources > Presentations by Date. Make sure to browse the earlier recordings in the Resource Library, because you might never know what you've been missing. And you can also search the Resource Library by keyword. If your local chapter or SIG has a video recording, or a (PowerPoint) slide deck of a recent session, then it can also be added to our library collection.

Canberra Chapter News

The Canberra Chapter enjoyed our seventh meeting of 2025 in August in the Board Room of Eastlake Football Club.

Chris continued with his excellent series on rules-based trading which continues to illuminate components of successful systems. Gabriel sent through an update of the portfolio competition which has participants with mixed results in the current market.

We held our third hybrid meeting of the year on 19 August with 10 local attendees. The presentation also attracted a healthy 12 online attendees. Phil Johns, Board member and founder of Nubyte Australia, gave an excellent thought-provoking presentation entitled ‘Challenging the Myths you trade by’. Phil discussed why price data only provides only one half of information required to trade successfully with time-based volume data providing critical information of what is really happening in the market. The video will be in the Resource library shortly.

Chris Meakin will be our next main presenter in September and will provide further rule-based trading guidelines and further integration of systematic trading. Members that are not quant-based traders have been enjoying integrating components of these presentations into their discretionary trading and watchlist construction.

Remember to bring your portfolio selection to our next meeting. If you would like to enter the portfolio competition and cannot make it to the meeting, send your selection to gabriel.spacca@ataa.asn.au

If any ATAA member or guest would like to present at one of our meetings either online or in person, please send me an email me in the first instance and we can discuss your topic.

Good trading and good health.

ATAA Canberra Chapter President

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS
and Trading Tips

Technical Analysis – A simple exit approach
Some of our market experts have said that it is easy to enter the market, but difficult to exit (profitably). Investors or traders who are new to this game might find the following information useful. But firstly, why might we want to exit a position? It could be for any one of a number of reasons including the following:
  1. For a new investment position, the share price has fallen and our investment decision on this occasion was not a good one, so we sell based on our pre-determined Stop Loss approach.
  2. The money is needed elsewhere, so we liquidate a position in order to redeploy the cash.
  3. The investment value has risen significantly, making it somewhat sensible to liquidate some or all of the position, perhaps to re-balance the allocation of our funds or to reduce the risks of this particular investment (eg. the portfolio weighting risk).
  4. The investment has risen to a pre-determined price target, so we want to lock in the profits and exit the position.
  5. The investment position is not going anywhere and our money is not working hard enough (opportunity cost), so we liquidate in order to redeploy the capital elsewhere for a better performance.
Many of the less-experienced traders and investors often struggle with exiting a position, and they tend to stumble, and wonder whether they should, or shouldn’t. A lot has been written about the importance of having an exit strategy in place, and actioning it without hesitation if it is triggered. Remember, the first loss is the cheapest.

One somewhat simple exit approach is to use the Parabolic-SAR (P-SAR) indicator which was developed by Welles Wilder Jr to find potential reversals in the market price direction, and therefore to provide a trade exit point. On the price chart it is normally shown as a series of dots, with one dot placed either above, or below, each candle (or bar).

The price value of the P-SAR point indicates the stop position for the next candle. While the P-SAR points are below the price, it indicates a rising trend; but when the P-SAR crosses to above the price, it indicates an exit should be considered.

The price chart shown below is a weekly candle chart of CBA bank. Note the dots below, and above, the candles.  Going forward, the only thing left to do before implementing this is to consider whether to use a weekly chart, or a daily, and whether to use a second “flag” of some sort to confirm that the exit should be taken.
Exit approach - Parabolic SAR.

In this particular example, if we were using the P-SAR to flag an exit, and if we were holding CBA during May and June, then the P-SAR crossing above the price in mid-July might have suggested we should consider an exit. The share price since then has been downtrending on this weekly chart.

Summary – Hopefully some of our readers have found this somewhat simple information useful.

Happy and safe investing/trading

Robert Brain

In Closing

I do hope you have found this edition of the Blast! Monthly News both interesting and useful. Feel free to send my any feedback - good or bad.

NOTES about this newsletter: The appearance of this email newsletter can be a little different depending on how you view it. In Google's Gmail the Gmail Inbox might show just a portion of this edition. At this stage I am not sure of the best way to work around this issue. And my apologies continue for any odd formatting that you might find which I cannot resolve - font size or line spacing etc - as these seem to be oddities in our CE email editor tool (there are probably odd HTML codes hidden behind the text, which we have not found yet). Every month when I prepare this newsletter, I spend ridiculous amounts of time fiddling around trying to make the line spacing consistent throughout, and the font sizes consistent; but it still turns out less than I would want it to.
