ATAA Blast! Newsletter #170 – July 2024

Dear ~~first_name~~

Welcome to this edition of the ATAA Blast! Newsletter. And my apologies for not being able to publish this early in the month as normal. Over the last couple of weeks I have had a few challenges, including preparing two special surveys requesting urgent feedback about the ATAA before we have our face-to-face board meeting this coming Sunday 21 July. Hopefully you have received the special email inviting you to complete the survey, and we are hoping you will be able to complete it before this weekend so that we can analyse the feedback and results in time for Sunday's deliberations. There is more about this below, or you can respond now to the new General member survey here.

We are very keen to tell everyone about the latest news from all corners of the ATAA, so contributions are very welcome from any ATAA member - especially from the Chapters, and the SIGs, and the network groups. And I normally aim to publish the Blast! News in the first week of the month.

In this edition of the ATAA Blast! newsletter you will see (with links for an easy and speedy go-to to the relevant section below):

  • ATAA National President's Update for July.
  • ATAA Website Resource Library updates - With lots of information about the immensely useful and growing Resource Library, including the now hundreds of video session recordings from the SIGs and network groups.
  • Online Discussion Forums - This resource is now growing in popularity in the ATAA website (for ATAA members only - login is required).
  • ATAA National Board Update - The latest news from the national board of directors, including: "First time visitors free", and from the Marketing Working Group: your email signature block, and ATAA logos to download.
  • List of all of the ATAA Chapters, SIGs and Network Groups - more opportunities for the ATAA members.
  • The ATAA Conference update - update for the upcoming ATAA Conference(s): an online event later this year, and a regular ATAA in-person conference late in 2025.
  • Updates from the ATAA Chapters and SIGs: Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney, and SIGs (or at least from those that have submitted content).
  • IFTA Update: Latest information from IFTA.
  • TECHNICAL ANALYSIS article - An article about ETFs in Australia.
  • Detailed benefits for ATAA members.

Included toward the bottom of this month's Blast! News is a summary "All about ETFs in Australia today". Also the ATAA Member Benefits section at the very bottom.

As the national Marketing Director, I am including key marketing phrases in this Blast!, including the ATAA Tag line in blue below, and the ATAA Elevator Pitch also in blue at the bottom of this email. Feel free to use these in your own correspondence to help encourage new members, and of course to remind existing members of why they are ATAA members.

I do hope you find this Blast! newsletter useful and interesting reading; but do feel free to tell us what you really think, and how we can improve it.

ps: Apologies for any odd formatting that you might find - font size or line spacing etc - but these seem to be oddities in our CE email editor.

National President's Update – July 2024

I visited the Canberra Chapter in June and took part in their monthly Chapter meeting. This was my fourth Chapter meeting in the past few months (apart from my regular monthly local ones in Melbourne), so I have now interacted with and received feedback from a good proportion of members attending Chapter meetings. The Canberra meeting had formal presentations (including my own), followed by an informal dinner amongst the participants. Like the other Chapter meetings I attended recently, the intention was to discuss the current state of the ATAA and seek members’ views on ways to improve our organisation.

The Marketing Working Group has been developing marketing plans to attract new members, and the results of its work will become evident in the near future.

The planning for the in-person full-day strategy board meeting on Sunday the 21st of July is now well advanced. Our intention is to develop an implementable plan that can lead to a greater number of new member registrations, as well as decreasing the proportion of memberships that are expiring. The wealth of suggestions received from members in the past few months will be discussed, as well as exploring other new ideas to help us move forward. It is now obvious that we need to try something different from what was done in the past, to increase our membership and attract members from other demographics that had not been specifically targeted so far. Please keep any suggestions coming.

ATAA National Board updates

Meeting Visitors - First Time Free
At a recent national board meeting the ATAA board agreed that all first-time visitors to Chapter meetings be permitted to attend for free. Non-members are always welcome to attend ATAA meetings, and pay the $40 Visitor Fee. This is normally done online in advance when you register to attend the meeting. However, if you have not attended an ATAA meeting in the past, you are welcome to attend your first meeting for free - and preferably register on the ATAA website so that we will be expecting you as a special first-time visitor.
ATAA Marketing Working Group Update - we urgently need your feedback
The ATAA board members are very busy preparing for the 1-day face-to-face board meeting this coming Sunday (21 July), where we will focus on two key questions:
  • What else do we need to do to retain members, and encourage them to renew their membership when it falls due?
  • What do we need to do to attract more new members into the ATAA?
Then we will be preparing a marketing strategy aimed it retaining members, and also at recruiting new members. If you have some thoughts along these lines, we will welcome your input into the discussions asap.
Please respond to the General member survey here.
We need your opinions urgently - To help prepare for the face-to-face board meeting this Sunday 21 July, we have prepared two separate surveys, and we urgently need your input for one of them - because your opinions and feedback are very important.

A Special Member Survey, has been prepared and is now ready for people to complete. This includes current ATAA members, plus everyone else who receives our communications - meeting visitors, past conference attendees, etc. Please respond to the General member survey here. And it will be fantastic if you couid do this before this coming weekend so we have time to analyse and interpret the results.

The second survey is a special Exit Survey, where we ask the non-renewing members to help us understand their reason for not renewing their ATAA membership. Maybe it is something that we have done, or not done. Maybe it was a time constraint, or a misunderstanding about what technical analysis is all about. The Exit Survey can be completed here..

Canberra Chapter News

The Canberra Chapter enjoyed the presentation by National President Jim Haralambidis at the June Meeting. Jim spoke on ‘Selling fast and Buying slow: What does the evidence tell us about the best rules for buying and selling’. A recording of the presentation will be available in the library soon.

Jim also joined local members for dinner and discussion about current directions and future plans of the National Committee.

Our July 16 meeting features a hybrid meeting format with Graham O’Brien, Head of Equity Markets and Equity Derivatives speaking online on some advanced options strategies, equity and ETF dividend strategies and providing a general Q&A on general ASX functioning. Locals can join us at the well heated Eastlake FC at 6.00pm while Interstate members are welcome to join us at 6.45pm. Graham’s excellent presentation last year was well received.

Canberra members wanting to attend this year’s ATAA Online conference on Saturday, October 19, at a venue with other members, including lunch are reminded to register their interest with Mark in the coming weeks so that a venue can be booked.

Good health and good COVID-free trading,

Mark Gleeson
ATAA Canberra Chapter President
[The Canberra Chapter generally meets on the third Tuesday each month.]

Melbourne Chapter News

In 2024 the Melbourne Chapter has been running the in-person hybrid meetings all year, with the invaluable networking from 5pm to 6pm, then the broadcast session 6-8pm, followed by further networking and guest speaker mingling over dinner after 8pm. The broadcast segment is usually recorded and uploaded to the ATAA website at some stage. So if you missed the session, you can view the video recording; but you would have missed out on the great networking opportunities and the exchange of trading tips and knowledge that only happens in the room.

The Melbourne Chapter always meets in-person on the second Thursday of each month, with networking before the 6pm session broadcast. All ATAA members who attend are given a "Door Prize" raffle ticket, with the winning tickets drawn during the mid-session break (when we change-over the speakers). You see, we have a truck-load of pre-loved trading and technical analysis books to give away at our meetings, and these are used as the Door Prizes in the Member give-away. And some of these books are absolute gems - for free!

Don’t forget that public transport (tram) runs past the hotel front door, and there is ample car parking around the corner.

Robert Brain
ATAA Melb Chapter President and interim Secretary
(for the Council team: Paul Ash, Jim Haralambidis, Keith Mundy, Tony Hambling, Tony Leonard, Robert Grigg).

[The Melbourne Chapter generally meets in person on the second Thursday each month, with networking before and after the broadcast segment which is 6-8pm.]

Sydney Chapter News

Our June online meeting was exceptionally well attended. Mary McNamarra gave her usual analysis of the market, which is always insightful and very helpful as she identifies the movement of the various markets now and discusses the movement over the previous months and years.

Gary Glover gave an excellent presentation in which he explained how the world’s best traders achieved triple digit gains. Gary has an impressive bio as a senior investment advisor with Novus Capital and with 24 years’ experience in financial markets his approach comes from a well-considered perspective. His presentation was well attended by over 50 ATAA members.

Sydney Chapter Council

[The Sydney Chapter currently meets online only, and generally meets on the third Monday of each month]

Your stock universe - All about ETFs in Australia today

At the time of writing there are about 370 ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) available for you to buy/sell on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) share market, offered by a number of ETF providers. However, when you study some of these ETFs you will find that many are not very liquid. This might not be an issue for some investors, but it is an issue for many investors and traders.

So, how do we find out which ones are tradeable / investable? Which ones are safe to play with? What sort of thematics do they follow? Who are the major ETF providers in Australia? Where can we go for more information?

Many ATAA members and guests will be aware that last week (Thursday 11 July) I delivered a presentation on this topic to the Melbourne Chapter Hybrid meeting in South Yarra. This session was recorded, and both the video recording and the powerpoint slides will soon be available on the ATAA website in the Resource Library.

Major ETF providers - Most of the current major ETF providers are listed here (as at February 2024):
ETF providers with only a few ETFs include the following:

Comparing ETFs
There are several websites that can be used to compare ETFs, but the comparison process might not be that simplistic:
    • Market Index and How to compare and Select ETFs.
    • InvestSmart.
    • StockSpot
    • MorningStar
    • Canstar

For more information on this topic, refer to the Melbourne June Hybrid meeting video recording and powerpoint slides which should be in the ATAA Resource Library very soon. And Brainy's Share Market Toolbox subscribers can read more in the eBook PDF Article ST-6275.
