ATAA Blast! Newsletter – February 2024 #165

Dear ~~first_name~~

Welcome to the February 2024 edition of the ATAA Blast! Newsletter.

Firstly, I would like to thank Darryl Nagel (Sydney Chapter) for running as our Blast! Newsletter editor from late 2022 through 2023 - its not an easy job. Darryl decided to retire from this role in late 2023, and I have volunteered to act as Blast! editor again until we can find another keen and enthusiastic member to take on the reins.

Going forward, we would love to have your opinion about what should be included in these newsletters. Please see the "We need your opinion" section below.

In this edition of the ATAA Blast! newsletter you can find:

  • A request for your invaluable feedback in the Blast! survey below.
  • ATAA National President's Report.
  • Meet your ATAA directors.
  • Updates from the ATAA chapters: Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney.
  • IFTA Update.
  • Benefits for ATAA members.

With our new ATAA website last year (using the ClubExpress web facility), we can more easily create and send these periodic newsletters to targeted recipients, plus easily prepare and analyse surveys, and many other things. We are still experimenting with these features, including the basics within these Blast! newsletters, so we are hopeful that the layout and formatting works for you - even so, there might still be some gremlins, so if you find one, please let us know.

You have probably received a couple of emails in recent weeks about the GO Markets Conference that's happening online on Saturday 17 February. If you are not too late, you might still be able to register and participate. Visit the ATAA website pronto, and follow the conference links.

As the national Marketing Director, I am including key marketing phrases in this Blast!, including the ATAA Tag line in blue below, and the ATAA Elevator Pitch also in blue at the bottom of this email.

We do hope you find this Blast! newsletter useful and interesting reading. But tell us what you think, and how we can improve it.

Robert B Brain

Blast! Newsletter Editor
ATAA Marketing Director
(and ATAA Life Member)

The ATAA is the knowledge network
for successfully using technical analysis
in financial market trading and investing

Please help - We need your opinion and feedback

The ATAA has been producing a monthly newsletter for many years. Over that time it has had many editors, and the style, appearance and content has changed quite a lot. But what do you really want to see in this monthly newsletter? Do you want to see some information on Technical Analysis? Do you want to see trading tips?

We have prepared a short 9-question survey, and we would really appreciate it if you could spend just 5 minutes of your busy day to tell us your opinion and answer the questions in the survey.
See the all-important 5-minute Blast! survey here.

National President's Report - February 2024

Dear ATAA Members and Visitors,

Your national board of directors has been working to progress the ATAA’s interests, and the newly formed Working Groups (WG) kept working through the holiday period.

The Marketing WG has met twice already in the new year, working on a number of marketing activities. It elected Robert Brain as the Group Leader (GL). At its first meeting, the WG (joined by Alan Clement) started working on a marketing proposal from our national sponsor Go Markets, who invited the ATAA to take part in an online conference on Feb 17 (“Trading Mastery 2024”). This conference will give us the opportunity to promote ATAA membership to a wider audience, as it is attracting participation from outside our usual meeting attendees. Furthermore, the online conference is also providing value to the current ATAA membership, as they have an opportunity to participate free of charge. An email has already gone out to the membership to inform them of this event. This promotion is only the start of our promotional activities, in order to increase our membership base.

The National Conference WG has met to start the review process and planning for future national conferences. It elected Alan Clement as the GL, who has extensive experience in organizing and running conferences of this type. The WG is seeking input from members on the nature and timing of our national conferences, and a survey of the membership will be organized to get this feedback.

The national board met on the 6th of February to kick off our activities for this year. Besides making sure that the ATAA is running smoothly, the board is working closely with the WGs to achieve our goals.

Jim Haralambidis

 ATAA National President

Meet your ATAA national directors

At the ATAA Annual General Meeting (AGM), held online last November, all ten of the members who nominated to be directors were accepted. Three of these were directors in the months leading up to the AGM, and the other 7 all responded to the urgent calls for "new blood" on the board.

You can see a list of our directors, including photos, on the ATAA website by following the menu: ATAA Overview > Current Office Bearers. And you will notice that the current directors come from a number of Australian states: Victoria, NSW, Queensland and ACT. So a couple of states are not represented at this point in time. Nonetheless, all directors try to truly represent all ATAA members from all around Australia. Going forward, there is nothing stopping additional members from other states nominating to join the board.

Melbourne Chapter in-person meetings – From strength to strength

The new year of 2024 has started nicely, with our recent (February) hybrid chapter meeting at the Arcadia Hotel in South Yarra. We had two of our Members delivering presentations for the full two hours, followed by dinner in the meeting room and further networking and discussions.

Marketing – We are including both the ATAA Elevator Pitch and the ATAA Tag Line in our correspondence, and on the website event details, and we think this is making a difference.

Travel and parking – Our meeting attendees are getting used to the public transport options (tram stop at the front door and South Yarra train station 500m down the road), and the car parking options (around the corner in the council open area – cheap until 6pm then free – or the inexpensive multi-level car park nearby – less than $10). The platter of finger food served during the networking before the meeting has proven rather popular (and we are still well under budget).

Hybrid meeting
– We have received a lot of feedback and expressions of appreciation for the 2-hour online portion of our chapter meetings, and the video recordings uploaded to the ATAA Reference Library for the benefit of all ATAA members. The one downside of these online sessions is that remote members and guests miss out on the pre-meeting in-person networking, and more of the same after the 8pm session finish while we have dinner in the hotel meeting room.

Special Door Prize – Many of our regular attendees look forward to getting a raffle ticket at the door each month, which gives the members an entry into the Door Prize raffle – we have a truckload of mint-condition second hand text books to hand out over time.

Recruiting and Retaining Members – At our next chapter council meeting we will be focusing on how to retain members, and how to recruit new members.

More ideas?
– Any members with some good ideas can contact our Melbourne chapter team (listed below), and discuss the same.

Robert Brain
ATAA Melb Chapter President and interim Secretary
(for the Council team: Paul Ash, Jim Haralambidis, Keith Mundy, Tony Hambling, Tony Leonard, Robert Grigg).

Adelaide Chapter News

Adelaide Chapter Update

We kicked off the new year with an engaging online presentation in January by Zac Zacharia who talked about how to make money in 2024. So, those who attended are now in the know!!

Our venue was not available for Zac’s presentation due to ongoing upgrades, but from February onwards we are back to our usual place.

Similar to 2023, our freshly appointed council members - Ola, Jurij, Michael, Roy and Taso - will collaborate to oversee chapter responsibilities.

Our chapter representatives convened early February at our usual hangout, Tavern 540, to chart the course for the upcoming year. Louise Bedford is our scheduled guest speaker for the February gathering. The council has compiled a roster of potential speakers for the remainder of the year, and efforts are underway to bring these plans to fruition.

We've also committed to harnessing the diverse knowledge base of our chapter, encouraging members to contribute short or extended presentations and engage in mutual learning.

A very popular activity last year, led by Jurij, was the stock picking competition. We were all trying to beat the index and each other. There were winners each month who got a very liquid asset as a prize. We plan to do this again this year.

All in all, it's been a solid start to the year. Looking forward to meeting everyone in-person or in cyberspace.

Sydney Chapter 2024

As conveyed at the Sydney Chapter 2023 Annual Meeting the Sydney Chapter Council will change the style of meetings for 2024 to address cost issues and challenges and changes experienced post-COVID. Monthly Chapter meetings will switch to online only with networking dinners every second month providing an ongoing opportunity for face-to-face member catch up. Feedback will be sought in July and November to assess the success of the arrangements and solicit any further changes that might improve member experience.

Your 2024 Chapter Council is made up of: Romy Baker, Paul Cronin, Ben Greening and Darryl Nagel. In line with the ATAA Constitution 2022 there will not be a Sydney Chapter President. The four office-bearers will jointly manage the chapter.  All communications will be sent to each office-bearer and decisions will be discussed and made jointly.

Meeting schedule for 2024

An Online monthly meeting - will be held on the third Monday of each month commencing at 6.30 pm. (Feedback to be sought at the initial meeting as to the preferred start time for future sessions).

The Online monthly meeting will include:

  • a review of charts as is currently practised;
  • a member can share a trade that they have taken;
  • we can review some content from the resource library;
  • a guest speaker can present when one is available;
  • the meeting will be member interactive.
The 2024 Chapter meetings will commence on Monday 19 February.

Face-to-face networking dinners - will be held every second month on the fourth Monday of every other month at the Castlereagh Club – this can include a focused discussion if that is the wish of the attendees. The ATAA Board has approved the proposal that the dinners be subsidised by some of the savings of expenditure on venue hire for the Chapter meetings.

The face-to-face networking dinners will commence on Monday 25 March at 6.30 for 7.00 pm and continue in May, July, September, November.

February Chapter Monthly Meeting, Monday 19th February, online only at 6.30pm. This will feature a presentation by Sunil Mangwani on the topic: "Trading effectively by using the 3M’s – Money, Mind & Method". For all the details and to register: Sydney Chapter Online Only Meeting - February 2024 - 2/19/2024.
