John Bollinger, CFA, CMT is the president of Bollinger Capital Management, an investmentmanagement company that provides technically-driven money management services, and develops and provides proprietary research for institutions and individuals.He created Bollinger Bands in the early ‘80s. Today traders and investors use Bollinger Bands as a reliable tool for assessing expected price action and Bollinger Bands are featured on most financial charting software and platforms.John Bollinger, a long-term proponent of Rational Analysis, the combination of technical and fundamental analysis, was the first analyst to earn both the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Chartered Market Technician (CMT) designations.He is a frequent lecturer on technical and quantitative analysis in the US and abroad. His book, “Bollinger on Bollinger Bands” has been translated into twelve languages.
Mr. Bollinger has developed several investor websites:,, and a forex website, Bollinger graduated from the School of Visual Arts majoring in cinematography and started studying the market shortly thereafter. After purchasing his first microcomputer in 1977, Mr. Bollinger became involved in the seminal stages of computer driven market analysis. Today he continues to write some of his own software, see, and develops analysis tools for traders.Mr. Bollinger is the recipient of the Technical Securities Analysts Association of San Francisco 1995 Lifetime Award for Outstanding Achievement in Technical Analysis, the Market Technicians Association 2005 Annual Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Technical Analysis, and the International Federation of Technical Analysts (IFTA) Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.

In his two-part talk John Bollinger will first compare and contrast the benefits and weaknesses of two conceptually different approaches to generating trading system ideas, first principles and search. In the second part of his talk he will present SystemView, a new open-source software project written in Python. SystemView visualizes trading-system data and is especially useful for understanding system-performance dynamics where the data may not be normally distributed, making traditional system performance summary statistics moot.
