Adam Sorab, FSTA, is Head of Technical Research at CQS, a $14 billion hedge fund management company based in London. Prior to joining CQS in 2004, Adam was Director of Absolute Return Strategies at Deutsche Asset Management in London. Prior to that he worked at Credit Suisse First Boston, where he was a Director of the firm’s internal hedge fund operation, the Leveraged Funds Group. Before this, Adam worked at Schroders in London, as a currency and interest rates derivatives trader. Adam holds a BSc (Hons) in Economics from the London School of Economics (1984). He was President of IFTA from 2009 to 2012 and is a Fellow (FSTA) and former Chairman of the UK’s Society of Technical Analysts (STA). Adam is also an Independent Member of the Investment Committee of the BUPA Pension Fund.

Does it really pay to sell in May? Or is there a better way?

The old saying “Sell in May and go away” is often used as a market timing tool by investors. In his talk, Adam Sorab will summarise some of the research his hedge fund company has had conducted with researchers at the INSEAD business school to test the “Sell in May” hypothesis. He will also discuss trading strategies designed on the back of this research to exploit observed seasonal characteristics and he will compare their results with buy and hold investment strategies. The results are both surprising and illuminating. While selling in May can be very effective; other months also have similar tendencies. In fact, there are several better ways to exploit seasonality when investing in and exiting the stock market.

In this presentation, Adam Sorab will draw on his experience as a former President of IFTA and Chairman of the UK’s Society of Technical Analysts (STA) to provide an overview of the field of technical analysis around the world to identify areas of common interest and particular specialisations. He will also talk about the use of technical analysis at CQS — one of the largest hedge fund management companies in Europe where he is head of Technical Research — and provide a summary of his technical analysis of global markets.
