6.40pm: Guest Speaker – Simon Russell - Director, Behavioral Finance Australia.
Topic: How to Take Control of your Investing Brain
Behavioural finance applies insights from the psychology of how we think and make decisions. In doing so it can help us better understand our investment choices and market movements. In this session, Simon will provide a glimpse into how subconscious processes in the brain can have significant implications for what we buy and sell, and the returns we ultimately achieve. He will also discuss a number of tips to help overcome some of these effects.
Simon Russell completed a degree in Psychology at the University of Adelaide in 1996, some of which still reflects current thinking in the field and is covered in the workshops. He combines this with a technical understanding of finance and investments obtained through financial qualifications: Bachelor of Commerce (University of Adelaide), Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance & Investments (Securities Institute of Australia, now Kaplan), Masters of Applied Finance (Macquarie University), Diploma of Financial Planning (MLC Advice Education). Simon has more than 15 years in providing advice to financial decision makers and advisers including:
- Corporate and government super funds on fund manager selection and portfolio construction (at Towers Perrin)
- Large and mid-cap listed companies on M&A, debt and equity capital raisings, and joint ventures (at Goldman Sachs and Rand Merchant Bank)m
- Financial advisers and accountants, particularly in relation to SMSF-advice (at NAB/MLC)
