9:30 – 9:45 Welcome and Introduction

9:45 – 12:00 Self-Managed Super Funds (SMSF) – still the most tax effective investment structure By Mark Beveridge

A Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) is a superannuation fund designed for members to have direct control over their retirement savings and investments. It differs from a normal super fund because all of the members act as trustees, with the authority to make the day-to-day decisions about how the fund operates and how to invest, subject to the superannuation laws. Trustees are also responsible for the overall investment strategy and all legal and statutory requirements.

Mark’s presentation will give an overview of the important elements involved in setting up and running an SMSF:

  What is an SMSF?

 Regulation and Responsibilities

 How much ‘self-management’ do I need to do?

 Minimum balances

 Can I trade shares, futures and options in an SMSF?

 Tax strategies

 Franking Credits

Mark will leave time for a Q&A session at the conclusion of his presentation.

 About Mark Beveridge:

Mark came into the investment scene in 1989, working as a researcher for an independent investment newsletter. In the early 1990’s he was a registered representative for a futures broker where Jim Berg (an ATAA speaker) was working.  Since 2005 he has been advising clients with SMSF’s and in 2011 became a registered SMSF Specialist Adviser with the Self Managed Super Fund Association. He is a founding director of Superfund Partners based in Southport with an office in the Garden City Office Park, Eight Mile Plains. He holds a Diploma of Financial Markets and a Graduate Diploma of Financial Planning.

12:00 – 1:00 Lunch

1:00 – 2:00 Charts of markets and stocks

We will look at some of the ASX 200 stocks picked by members in the ‘December Stock picking’ game and examine the charts when nominated and what they look like today; comments from members will be welcomed.

2:00 – 3:30 SMSF continued by Tim Young

To augment the presentation given by Mark, we will look at a selection of online SMSF material such as MoneySmart and the ATO (Australian Taxation Office) websites. CPA Australia and Chartered Accountants Australia have teamed up to present a free online course for SMSF trustees and we will look at this training tool. There will be time for comments.

3:30 pm: Meeting close

Please note: There will be a break in both the morning and afternoon sessions with coffee, tea and nibbles provided throughout the day. The location is next to the Logan Central Plaza where take-away foods is available. The room has a kitchenette and those bringing lunch can use the fridge.
