how markets work

mean reversion trading

risk management

having a winning mindset

With many detailed examples and even a few trade ideas, Alan will take us on a journey from beginning to full time independent professional. Whether you're an experienced trader or just starting out, you're sure to uncover a few trading gems in this presentation to take away and try yourself.

Alan is a trading strategy designer and independent trader with 25 years experience in the financial industry. Following a successful professional career in both investment management and investment banking, he now manages his own independent trading business. His main focus is in the design and development of quantitative trading systems that trade on multiple markets.

Alan is an IFTA Certified Financial Technician (CFTe) and National Director of the Australian Technical Analysts Association. His blog can be found at and he can be contacted at

12:10–1:15 pm: Lunch

1:15–1:45 pm: 1) Candlestick analysis in shorter time frames; and 2) 4 Steps to develop a trading plan

1:50–3:25 pm: Second presentation: How to Beat the Benchmark with Ease by Alan Clement (including a 20 minute break)

Alan will draw on some of the lessons learned in the first presentation to demonstrate how we can use quantitative analysis to build very simple models that can easily beat our benchmark. If you've always thought systematic trading is difficult or complex, then think again. Alan will demonstrate how anyone with a basic understanding of Excel can put together a set of rules that can easily outperform a buy & hold strategy. Using a step-by-step approach he'll build towards a strategy that has performed consistently well over the last 10 years through ever changing market conditions. The strategies demonstrated will be fully exposed for you to take away and try in your own environment. If you've never been introduced to quantitative analysis before, this is the perfect primer that will aim to demonstrate why this approach can often be superior to a discretionary view.
