7:00pm: Charles Browne – Do Candlestick Patterns 'work'?

There have been claims that candlestick patterns don’t “work”. These claims are never backed up with backtesting results, but just statements of opinion. In this presentation, Charles will present some tests (his own and others) that demonstrate that candlesticks can provide a trading edge if implemented properly. A stock trading system based on a candlestick pattern will be presented.

8:00pm: Coffee/tea

8:20pm: Charles Browne – Bitcoin and Other Cryptocurrencies

For a number of years, so-called experts in the financial world have been predicting the demise of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. In December, 2017, the price of Bitcoin reached a high of US$19,970, with a market cap of US$334 billion. Other cryptos are rising strongly, including Ripple, which currently has a market cap of US$137 billion. There is now growing belief in some circles that cryptocurrencies will disrupt the financial world more profoundly than the introduction of the internet, and that stock brokers and other financial intermediaries become a thing of the past. Is this possible?

This presentation will cover the following topics:

  • What are cryptocurrencies?
  • Why traders and investors should be aware of cryptocurrencies?
  • The concept of programmable money – a new paradigm.
  • How will cryptocurrencies affect the financial markets?
  • Will the public be affected?
  • The pros and cons of trading cryptocurrencies.

Charles Browne is a private trader and has been trading the markets since 1972. He is the current SA ATAA Chapter President and a past National ATAA President, a position he held from 2004 to 2009. He has traded a range of markets including shares, options, forex and stock indexes.
